Injuries & Moves: Donaldson experiences hamstring tightness during rehab game
LATEST NEWS
April 18: 3B Josh Donaldson experiences tightness during Minor League rehab
game
Donaldson went 1-for-3 in Double-A Somerset’s 17-9 win over New Hampshire on
Tuesday, but the infielder is continuing to experience tightness in his right
hamstring, which will likely preclude his being activated on Wednesday as
initially planned.
“I don’t think it’s a setback; he didn’t pull it or have to come out of
the game,” manager Aaron Boone said. “But I don’t think it was all the way
where it needs to be.”
April 18: LHP Carlos Rodón experiencing back discomfort
Rodón tossed a two-inning, "split" bullpen as scheduled on April 17, but the
left-hander reported that his “back is still barking a little bit on him,”
according to manager Aaron Boone. Rodón is expected to have tests performed
near the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Fla.
“We’ve got to get the back situation calmed down a little bit,” Boone
said. “It’s frustrating for him, certainly. Again, the elbow is good. I don
’t think this is anything that’s a big deal other than a nuisance that’s
slowing him a little bit. We know he’s going to be worth the wait.”
April 16: OF/DH Giancarlo Stanton placed on 10-day injured list, INF Oswald
Peraza recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Stanton strained his left hamstring running out a two-run double in the
seventh inning of Saturday’s 6-1 win over the Twins. More >>

INJURY UPDATES
10-day and 15-day IL
OF/DH
Giancarlo Stanton (left hamstring)
Expected return:
Stanton was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring, and
manager Aaron Boone said on April 18 that the club is hopeful to have Stanton
back “in six weeks,” which would be the week of May 28. Stanton felt his
left hamstring grab as he pulled into second base with a double in the
Yankees' 6-1 win over the Twins on April 15. He gestured toward the bench,
calling for a pinch-runner, and glumly told Boone that he wouldn’t be
playing for a while. Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list on April
16. (Last updated: April 18)
3B
Josh Donaldson (right hamstring tightness)
Expected return:
Donaldson went 1-for-3 in a Minor League rehab game on April 18 for Double-A
Somerset, but continued to experience tightness in his right hamstring. The
Yankees plan to re-evaluate Donaldson on April 19, but he is now unlikely to
be activated for that game. Donaldson was placed on the 10-day IL,
retroactive to April 6, after he exited the April 5 game against the
Phillies. (Last updated: April 18)
OF
Harrison Bader (left oblique strain)
Expected return:
Bader is expected to hit against Luis Severino in live batting practice on
April 20 at Yankee Stadium, then could begin a Minor League rehab assignment.
He has been taking batting practice, running bases, taking fly balls and
grounders, and throwing to bases. Bader was placed on the 10-day IL on March
30 (retroactive to March 27).
“It’s right around the corner, which is very exciting,” Bader said. “It’
s been a really good progression.”
Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Bader will serve a relatively longer stint
in the Minors, saying, “It’s not just going to be a few days down there. He
’s got to play some games, get up to playing back-to-back [games], volume of
innings and things like that.” (Last updated: April 18)
LHP
Carlos Rodón (left elbow strain, back stiffness)
Expected return:
Rodón is being sent for tests after reporting continued discomfort in his
lower back after a bullpen session on April 17. Rodón’s progress has been
slowed by the recurring stiffness, which manager Aaron Boone described as “
kind of a nuisance.” The positive development is that Rodón’s elbow is now
healthy.
Rodón was diagnosed with a mild strain of the brachioradialis muscle in his
left elbow after experiencing discomfort on March 5; he said he pitched
through a similar issue last May with the Giants. Rodón began his throwing
program on March 17. He was placed on the 15-day IL on March 30 (retroactive
to March 27). (Last updated: April 18)
RHP
Luis Severino (right lat strain)
Expected return:
Severino tossed a “two up” bullpen session on April 16 at Yankee Stadium,
simulating an inning, sitting down and then returning for another inning. He’
s scheduled to face Harrison Bader and others in a live batting practice
session on April 20 in the Bronx. Severino, who was placed on the 15-day IL
(retroactive to March 27) on March 30, sustained a right lat strain while
working out following his March 21 start against the Tigers, according to
manager Aaron Boone.
Severino was hit hard over the spring, allowing 15 runs in 15 innings for a
9.00 ERA. He has said that he would be “blessed” to miss three to five
starts during the regular season. (Last updated: April 18)
RHP
Jonathan Loáisiga (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return:
Loáisiga could resume his throwing program by the weekend of April 21-23,
manager Aaron Boone said. Loáisiga experienced soreness in his pitching
elbow before an April 7 game at Baltimore. He was sent to New York for an
MRI, which revealed inflammation but a structurally sound ligament. Loáisiga
received an injection on April 8 which will lead to two weeks of no throwing,
according to Boone, who said, “Hopefully this isn’t a long-term thing; we
don’t think it is, but it’s frustrating, especially because of how
important he is to our team.” (Last updated: April 18)
RHP
Lou Trivino (right elbow ligament sprain)
Expected return:
Trivino threw a bullpen session on April 10 and is scheduled to throw another
bullpen on April 14. Boone said the reliever will move to a live bullpen
session afterwards. Trivino resumed his throwing program on March 13. He was
placed on the 15-day IL on March 30 (retroactive to March 27). (Last updated:

C
Ben Rortvedt (shoulder aneurysm)
Expected return:
Rortvedt underwent a procedure on Feb. 22 to address an aneurysm of the
posterior artery near his left shoulder, which will keep him out of baseball
activities for at least a month. Rortvedt suggested that he could need two or
three months off before returning. He was experiencing discoloration on the
fingers of his left hand, which prompted the examinations. “I was super
excited about Spring Training, but it came up as something we couldn’t
dismiss,” he said. “That came as a shock. It’s pretty frustrating.” He
was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 27, on March 30.

60-day IL
RHP
Tommy Kahnle (right biceps tendinitis)
Expected return:
Though Kahnle played catch at Yankee Stadium on April 5 and the session was
said to have gone well, he was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 8. On
April 10, manager Aaron Boone said that Kahnle was doing well in his throwing
program but that he hasn't moved to throwing off a mound. Kahnle experienced
right biceps tendinitis early in Spring Training, prompting a March 21
cortisone injection. He said that he dealt with a similar issue in 2018, when
he attempted to pitch through the injury and was demoted to Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. (Last updated: April 11)
RHP
Frankie Montas (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return:
Montas underwent arthroscopic surgery on Feb. 21 in Los Angeles, a procedure
performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who cleaned up the hurler’s labrum. Montas
said that he “for sure” expects to pitch in the big leagues this season,
and he could begin playing catch as soon as the week of May 7. Recurring
inflammation in the shoulder affected Montas last season with the Athletics
and Yankees, and he said that he “wasn’t fully 100 percent” when the
Yankees acquired him in a six-player trade on Aug. 1. He was transferred to
the 60-day injured list on April 3. (Last updated: April 3)
RHP
Scott Effross (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
Effross underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2022 and began a throwing
program on March 6. He said that his recovery is going well. Given the
typical timeline of 12-18 months, Effross is expected to miss the entire 2023
season. He remained behind in Tampa, Fla., when the team headed north.
Effross was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 30. (Last updated:
March 30)
RHP
Luis Gil (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2022, and he's expected to return to
the mound some time during the second half of the ‘23 season. The
right-hander was activated from the 60-day injured list on Nov. 10, though
that was a procedural move. Gil resumed playing catch on Oct. 4 at the Yankees
’ player development complex in Tampa, Fla., and will continue his rehab. He
was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 30. (Last updated: March 30)
