Harvey visits doctor, could miss Opening Night

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Mets spent much of this spring preaching the importance
of their starting pitchers' health, carefully scripting their throwing
programs and aligning the rotation. It may have been for naught. Matt
Harvey's Spring Training is finished, and his Opening Night start is in
jeopardy due to a "non-baseball medical issue."
The Mets on Monday scratched Harvey from his final Grapefruit League start
Tuesday against the Marlins and were awaiting the results of his trip to the
doctor. The team has not revealed the nature of Harvey's ailment beyond
stressing that it is a non-orthopedic issue, unrelated to his arm.
"I think it's a little early to attach any level of concern," general manager
Sandy Alderson said. "We need to wait for more medical information before we
decide if it's of concern, or grave concern, or no concern."

the day, and he may fly to New York for a follow-up appointment.
With only six days until Opening Night in Kansas City, that leaves doubt as
to whether Harvey will face the Royals.
"It's hard to say right now," manager Terry Collins said. "I don't know just
yet. Certainly what I do know, we're very lucky to have the pitching that
we've got. In case he can't go, we'll have someone else ready."
If Harvey cannot pitch, it would nonetheless create a sticky situation for
the Mets. The team is already shying away from Jacob deGrom in Kansas City,
because deGrom's wife is due with the couple's first child on April 5. That
leaves Noah Syndergaard, who is currently lined up to appear in the Mets'
second game of the season, as well as Steven Matz and Bartolo Colon.
For now, reliever Sean Gilmartin will start Tuesday at Tradition Field as the
Mets wait for more information. Harvey's agent, Scott Boras, did not respond
to a message seeking comment.
"It is mysterious," Collins said. "But I'm not at liberty to discuss it right
now. I wouldn't assume anything until we hear from the doctors."

Harvey, who turned 27 on Sunday, was set to enter his second full season
since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2013. He posted a 13-8 record
and 2.71 ERA last year, adding two more wins and a 3.04 ERA in the
postseason. In part because of the uncertainty surrounding deGrom's
availability, the Mets named Harvey their Opening Night starter earlier this
month.
Now, that honor is in jeopardy, though the Mets cautioned not to make
assumptions with so little hard information available.
"It's way too premature for us to discuss anything related to Opening Day,"
Alderson said. "I understand Opening Day is not too far away, but we're
dealing with tomorrow, and we should know something more tomorrow or the next
day.
"If he had to have a wisdom tooth pulled, he wouldn't pitch tomorrow. So
let's not jump to conclusions here."
