General manager Sandy Alderson indicated after the team's 7-3 loss to the Padres that the team will not be trading for Gomez prior to Friday's non-waiver Trade Deadline. Multiple reports earlier in the day indicated that Gomez would come to the Mets in exchange for starting pitcher Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores. Gomez, 29, was the centerpiece of the 2008 deal that brought Johan Santana to the Mets from the Twins. Then a top prospect, Gomez did not blossom into a star until 2012, three years after the Twins traded him to the Brewers. Over the next three seasons, he hit .277 with 66 homers, 111 stolen bases and an .819 OPS. Gomez's production has dropped off a bit this season, with a .266 average, eight home runs, seven steals and a .761 OPS over his first 73 games. But that still represents a significant upgrade over the .252 average and .603 OPS the Mets have received from their center fielders.
